# Choosing recipients

> Send to a group, all members, or a custom list

When you [send](/emails/sending) an email, you choose **who receives it**: by group, all members, or (if supported) a custom list.

## Send to a group

* Select **Send to group** and pick one or more [groups](/groups/using-groups-in-emails). Every member **currently in** that group (with an email address) receives the email.
* Use this for recurring audiences (e.g. Board, Class of 2026). Members in multiple selected groups are only sent once.

## Send to all members

* Select **All members** (or "Everyone"). Every member in the organization who has an **email** address receives the email.
* Use for org-wide announcements. Consider filtering in Members first to confirm the list is what you expect (e.g. no test accounts).

## Send to a custom list

* If the UI supports it, you can **select individual members** (e.g. search and add by name or email) instead of a group. Use when the audience is ad hoc and not already in a group.
* You can sometimes **exclude** members (e.g. "All except Board") depending on the app.

## Who actually receives the email?

* Only members with a valid **email** address. Members without email are skipped (and may be noted in the send summary).
* Duplicates are avoided: if someone is in two selected groups, they get one email.

<Note>
  Recipient count is shown before you confirm send. If the number looks wrong, change the group or list and try again.
